Becoming a Vocational Education and Training Practitioner: Competencies Subject-Matter-Experts Need and Learning Strategies Available

Thesis by : Amy Jo Nelson

This research project examines the competencies needed by subject-matter-experts (SMEs) who become vocational education and training (VET) practitioners and ways of developing them. An extensive literature review, an online survey of 100 training and development professionals, and an online survey of 14 VET practitioners who worked in education and industry revealed the skills needed to teach/train/instruct, how SMEs develop these skills, the support organizations provide new VET practitioners, the importance of being competent at various job roles, the strengths and weaknesses of a draft competency model, and opportunities for change in U.S. higher education. The results reported include the traits and competencies VET practitioners need to succeed, and ways these competencies can be developed and maintained. A learning model is developed and presented as is a way of improving the education of VET practitioners.
